Arm Reduction (Brachioplasty)

Arm Reduction (Brachioplasty)

Thick arms are embarrassing. The arms appear convex while wearing a blouse. Liposuction can reduce the size of arms without leaving prominent scars. However if there is a lot of loose skin and sagging arms one may have to undergo brachioplasty to reduce the size of the arms. Here the surgeon will have to excise the excess skin and fat.

Do you need arm Reduction?

More than for aesthetics, if your sagging arms are creating what is called a “bat’s wing deformity,” which can restrict motion and interfere with the use of your arms, you should get an underarm surgery done.

Ideal Candidates

If you have sagging arms and you are otherwise in good health, without active diseases or serious, pre-existing medical conditions, you should probably consider getting a brachioplasty done.

Procedure

First the surgeon marks the areas of excess fat on your arms. If only a liposuction is planned, the scarring will be hardly noticeable.

However if there is loose excess skin then it is removed usually in the shape of either an ellipse or a triangle. Sometimes a liposuction is also done on the arms to achieve smoother results. Once the excess fat and skin is excised, the incisions are sutured and left to heal. Sometimes a drain may be used to help the healing process.

Enhancing the Procedure

Brachioplasty is often done in conjunction with other procedures such as saddle bags removal, love handles removal, breast augmentation or breast reduction or a tummy tuck.
