Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is the rebuilding of new breasts usually for a woman who has had her breasts removed due to breast cancer.

Do you need a BREAST reconstruction surgery?

Breast reconstruction is a choice every woman has to make for herself. Although it is optional, for many women it offers significant emotional and practical benefits for getting back on the road to recovery after surviving cancer.

The goal is to restore one or both breasts to near normal shape, appearance, symmetry and size following mastectomy, lumpectomy or congenital deformities.

This can either begin at the time of mastectomy or be delayed until a later date.

Ideal Candidates

It is done on patients who are otherwise in good health, without active diseases or serious, pre-existing medical conditions.

Procedure

Breast reconstruction procedures are done primarily in two methodologies. One is using the patient’s own tissue or autologous reconstruction and the second is using implants or prosthetic materials.

Microvascular reconstruction is a state-of-the-art technique whereby tissue is harvested with its blood vessels from one part of the body and used to reconstruct the breast. The harvested part is shaped into the breast and the blood vessels of the harvested tissue is connected to the blood vessels in the chest using the operating microscope. Usually, excess fat and skin in the lower part of the abdomen is used for reconstructing the breast. This means that the patient gets the added benefit of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) while doing this procedure. The nipple and areola are reconstructed at a later stage. If the tissue over the abdomen is not suitable, tissue from the buttocks or thigh may be used for the reconstruction.

In procedure using implants, the surgeon uses silicone implants to reconstruct the breast.
