Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Rhinoplasty or a nose job as it is better known, is one of the most common surgical procedures done on the face. It corrects a prominent, unusual, asymmetric or irregular nose and it is also done to correct an undesirable nasal tip or a bulbous nose and to reshape the span of the nostrils.
Do you need a nose job ?
If you are self-conscious about your nose, this cosmetic procedure can help with your self-image and confidence. Medical reasons for getting your nose fixed include recurring sinus infections, complications due to a broken nose, a deviated septum or even major snoring problems.
Ideal Candidates
If you are otherwise in good health without active diseases or serious, pre-existing medical conditions, a nose job could be the best solution. It is generally not done till the nose approaches adult size. Rhinoplasty is done only in an adult. However, if there are deformities it can be corrected in girls after the age of 14 years and in boys after the age of 15 years.
In adults, ageing can lead to the skin losing its elasticity and this may result in the nose becoming longer and drooping. This can be easily corrected while elevating the nasal tip which can make you look considerably younger.
Procedure
There are typically two rhinoplasty techniques namely, open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision in the skin between the nostrils (the columella) and then makes additional incisions inside the nose. Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions only in the interior of the nose.
Each technique has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The procedure of choice will be based on your anatomy and desired results, which will be discussed in detail during your initial consultation.
Enhancing The Procedure
Patients desirous of a rhinoplasty may also want to alter the shape of their chins or cheekbones. In such, your surgeon may recommend implants as a part of the operative plan during your initial consultation. View all of our cosmetic procedures of the face.
